Let’s face it, apps are going to rule the world one day.
The days of searching on your phone for train times or logging onto Facebook via Google are over. Apps are there so you can access anything you want in a few clicks. No one can deny that having these handy buttons waiting 24/7 makes life easier, especially if you live in a place like London.
After discovering a few apps that are now indispensable to me, I thought I’d share my top London apps essential for life in the Big Smoke.
One of the first apps essential for any Londoner is the DesignMyNight App. While I may be bias (due to the fact I still work for these guys) the app is still super useful for finding that perfect bar, pub or event.
One of the best uses for the app is pulling up a great selection of cool cocktail bars around a specified area, with a map to locate them. This is perfect if your trying to impress someone on a last minute date, or in my case when I somehow ended up at the wrong Breakfast Club without the secret bar through the fridge and had to improvise…
A unique feature of the app is that it also allows you to book a table, which is ideal for those on the move who don’t want to arrive at a busy venue and had to jostle elbows while propping up the bar.
This is the kind of app you always kick yourself for not downloading. Hailo is the easiest way to book a cab, in just two clicks. All you need to do is set your pick-up location for a quote, and accept.
The genius part of the app is that you can track how long it will take your cab to arrive in real time.
If you happen to run out of cash – quite an easy thing to do in London – then you can even pay for the cab fare with your phone and get an email receipt.
If you’ve ever felt a bit out of the loop, Hype is the trendy app that will get you integrating in the hipster circles in London.
Pulling through all the latest foodie deals, awesome activities and top events, Hype! gives you the insider info you need for a day in London.
This app is great for grabbing discount pizzas, finding cool bars with happy hours, the latest fashion boutiques and everything in between. All of the events are updated by the curators in real time, so its the perfect app for those last minute heroes.
Arguably the most useful app of the bunch (certainly to me) this app will get you ANYWHERE in London. Using GPS, Citymapper calculates how to get from your current location to a designated stop via bus, taxi, train, bicycle or even just by walking!
An example: me and my friend are stuck in Hackney Wick, trying to get to Greenwich. The app not only tells you which bus to get, but the handy GPS map will help you find the bus stop and even tell you when to get off… Now that’s smart.
Additional benefits of this app include the new partnership with Hailo (above) so if you decide that grabbing a taxi is easier than getting the nightbus for three hours, you simply have to tap the icon to book, no need to even change app.
Yes its another booze related one, no I don’t have a problem and yes this app will also change your life.
Beer aficionados, connoisseurs and hop experimentalists; you can now choose your brew before you even step foot in the pub.
I understand this statement may be overwhelming at first, but breathe deeply and read on…
By collating as many bars and pubs as possible, Inapub have created an app that allows you to search for pubs nearby you, and then chucks them your way as an easily digestible stream of boozers listed by distance from your current location.
So far, pretty normal right? It’s when you search for beers near you that everything gets interesting. You can scroll down until you find the tipple of your choice, it then lists which boozer is selling the brew, distance from you, map, address and range of beers served. Simple and easy to use.
Whatever kind of life you lead in London, there is no denying these apps will help make it easier. What are your favourite apps for a London life? Share your favourites by commenting below.
