Amazing Things to Do in Amsterdam
Ok, so this has been done before but seriously this is one of the most picturesque parts of Amsterdam. The scenic canals, upmarket restaurants and trendy stores mean that the Jordaan district is a hotspot for visitors. Wander by the canals, grab a divine ice cream or tuck into some monumentally delicious and unhealthy pancakes.
Another classic location, Vondelpark is a must, especially if the sun is shining. It’s self explanatory that this lush green park should be explored.
A tiny little bar not far from the Centraal Station, Vesper Bar is a fantastic place to go to for amazing cocktails in Amsterdam. When we arrived the bar was packed with people and one talented guy was whipping up the cocktails for the whole place. With a nod to the first ever Bond girl, the bar makes an incredible Vesper Martini – their speciality of course. Not only did the single bartender manage to keep everyone happy but he even gave each of us a beer on the house when we left. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.
A top tip led me and my friends to this hidden bar. From the street there is no sign that past the unassuming black door is an uber-trendy little speakeasy. All you have to do is ring the bell and a guy answers, asks how many people in your group and ushers you in. There are some crazy concoctions going on here, I opted for the Duck d’Orange with actual duck liver blended with a four year aged rye whiskey and orange confiture.
Red Light District
Infamous, the Red Light District is Amsterdam’s most talked about area. Legal prostitution is a strange thing to witness. The women bang on the door behind the glass, you can see the bed in the background and even a few sex toys lying around. While you might expect the area to be quite seedy, the surrounding bars and restaurants are actually pretty upmarket.
A top local joint that is perfect for brunch, Moeders is every mothers favourite. The interior of the restaurant is full of pictures of mothers, mismatched cutlery and the food tastes like its made with a mothers love. The stamppot is awesome here, and the coffee is hard to beat.
The best meal I had in Amsterdam was here. The whole group I was with also agreed that the food here was simply superb. Positioned at the beginning of the Red Light District you could see the faint red hue from the windows below as you tucked into incredible steaks, fall of the bone lamb and much more.
In de Buurt
Ok so I am definitely still a little immature, but I found this place hilarious. They actually have some great nights in de Buurt and I have to say the beer tasted amazing In de Buurt.
Recommended by a number of people, Trouw is where the locals come to listen to sweaty rave music and dance the night away. Expect long queues, amazing DJ’s (a number of Berghain resident DJ’s frequently play here) and a great night of getting down.
Hope you enjoyed these places as much as I did, and feel free to share any other awesome places you have visited in Amsterdam, as I am totally visiting this beautiful place again as soon as I can.
